ANTONIA & LAURENCE {PRE-ENGAGEMENT SHOOT}

So you are probably thinking, pre-engagement shoot? Little did we know, a few days after the shoot, Laurence popped the question. So after all I guess we can call this an engagement shoot! Congrats!

This lovely couple resides in Hong Kong, and with all our long-distance client, we always host a Skype meeting so we get to know each other and hear their stories. The initial meeting helps us better prepare for the shoot; from style, location, to planning the itinerary. And for Antonia & Laurence, we’ve finalized to the following location, style and word cloud: Vintage-inspired, character, trench-coat, wayfarer, editorial, Granville street, Gastown.

I just love word cloud.. when I am brainstorming and can’t form a sentence, I just spit out all these words and realize it in the form of photography. So without further ado, I present you Antonia & Laurence’s pre-engagement session.

The twelve o’clock sun, it’s tempting to run for open shades and excuse for a lunch break, but it was the perfect light to produce this high contrast look.

We’ll end with my favorite shot of the day. I love picture that tells multiple stories. And in fact, it really doesn’t matter if I used the most expensive lens for this shot. This was shot from the inside of a cafe, behind the beautiful couples, and as the couples engaged in their conversation, I used them to frame Antonia & Laurence.

BABY ON THE WAY!

Surprise! I am expecting!

Our baby, who is due in May, is giving us the best reason to excuse from our busy schedule and make the effort to document these maternity moments.

On this Saturday morning, we decided to pick up the camera and go out for a drive. As we were driving, we found this cute little booth and we can’t help but stop and snap a few pictures here.

We brought Rossi along with us! How can we not involve this big brother-to-be in these maternity photos?

We are so excited and can hardly wait for the world to meet our baby!

One of the projects that Yinger and I have always wanted to do is to do some self-portrait of us two without any help of other people. We brought our tripod with us this time and took some self-portraits while we visited the “Metronatural” Seattle.

So lucky that we are only few hours away from Seattle, and as much as we’ve visited Pike Place many times, we still always make an effort to visit the Pike Place public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, Washington.

We found some nice historical architecture, reminiscing of Gastown in Vancouver, we had fun running back and forth to the camera to set up these self-directed shots.

Thank God for such a wonderful day. Scrolling down along the Alki Beach trail, overlooking the peaceful water.
It’s a lot less windy and cooler than Vancouver’s waterfront. Maybe because Alki Beach is surrounded by many other islands which blocked the wind. It’s so enjoyable here and I can’t wait to come back again with our baby and Rossi!

Goodbye Winter Hello Spring

Vancouver has been voted for — from one of the best cities to live in the world, the most livable cities in Canada, to being voted as the city with the world’s best reputation; whatever that means. With those recognitions, one would picture the Vancouver postcard with the mountains lies on the north shore with snows sprinkle on the mountaintop.

But for myself, when I think of Vancouver, I think of Raincouver; the city with a reputation for liquid sunshine. I’ve embraced the weather of the Pacific Northwest, even when it comes to photography. I’ve come to love shooting in the rain, and the romance when you see a photograph with glossy sidewalks and umbrellas. My friends, including my clients thinks I am nuts! My camera gears are weather-sealed, and I see this as an amazing opportunity for great photographs, why not give it a shot (pardon my pun).

Today is the last day of winter, so say hello to spring. Spring in Vancouver doesn’t translate to sunshine, it just means more sunshine melting in the form of liquid. I know people complains about the rain, but if it wasn’t for all the precipitations, this city wouldn’t be this green and beautiful.

So welcome to the Pacific Wet-Coast!

QUALLY & JIM {Engagement Shoot}

It’s one thing to have to wake up early for an engagement shoot, it’s another thing to have to deal with jet lag. Coming from the other side of the world, Our trooper couple; Qually & Jim flew in from Hong Kong to iron out some final details for their upcoming wedding in July, and we were able to take them out for a day for their engagement shoot.

Typically we always try to avoid business logos or signs in our photos, but c’mon… How fitting is this!

At the initial consultation, that’s our time to really get to know our client. We hang our cameras, to make a human connection rather then a photographer/client connection, to hear the couple’s story… I don’t think I can do it any other way.

From listening to Qually & Jim’s story, I soon found out the Sunset Beach it’s a place of significance and meaning to this couple. The beach might not be as warm as Laguna, or the sand as fine and white as Maldives, but none will carry the weight and feeling of Sunset Beach.

SHANDA WALTERS {Actor Headshot}

We had a tremendous time working with theatre teacher/actress Shanda Walters! In this shoot we covered the looks from the “West Van mom” all the way to the crime investigator. I love when our client comes over-prepared for a shoot. Shanda arrived with suit travel bags and duffle bags; all full of changes for the different looks, for I always encourage my client to bring it if they are in doubt. And when such opportunity presents itself, that’s when the stylist in me gets to work!

OLIVIA STEELE-FALCONER {ACTOR HEADSHOT}

We had a lot of fun working with Olivia Steele-Falconer — a busy young actress just came back filming in New York plays the daughter in the upcoming movie “After the Fall” starring David Duchovny. This film is inspired by true events and tells the poignant story of grieving parents who used the unexpected death of their young 13-year-old daughter (Maria Fareri played by Olivia) as inspiration to build a world class children’s hospital.

I love her eyes on this following shot. You can even see my reflection in her eyes. Stunning.

New business has arrived!

So exciting! Our new business cards has arrived! In fact, this is our sixth revision! If I can find all my previous cards, I’ll definitely post it in my future posting, perhaps I’ll frame it and it’ll be a pretty cool visual of my company timeline.

On another post I’ll introduce y’all to my amazing graphics designer and the making of the card; from all the draft work to the finished product.

Nowadays people will have all their contacts stored in their phone, and the importance of business cards is somewhat forgotten – it makes a statement in the business world. It reflects who the person is, and it gives people an imagination of what the person is capable of doing. It’s huge when when it comes to branding!

So for our sixth edition, I connected with my graphics designer extravagant – Selina. And I told her that the business card I see will have a timeless design, that’s clean, screams class, and perhaps somewhat sexy. And after countless back and forth emails, phone calls, and nitpicked every serif on the design, here’s the final product!

The final product was realized by the folks at JukeBoxPrint.com! The card came out to be exactly to what we are looking for!

LOS ANGELES – City of Angles

It is so easy to get caught up in running your photography business – You become the receptionist (answering emails & inquiries), administrators (tax, receipts, book-keeping, the marketing specialist (Don’t forget social media specialist), blogger, graphics designer (spending hours organizing your Lightroom catalog & editing images on Photoshop) — Oh, and don’t forget, taking pictures. So being a photographer, or perhaps a self-employed entrepreneur requires you to wear many hats. So it can easily become overwhelming. And how do I wear all these hats? Answer: Work/Life balance – First take care of yourself. If you are not investing and taking care of yourself, most likely you won’t be on your A-game with your clients, skill-sets, creativity, family, friends, and the list goes on….

So to make the long story short, I took a mini-vacation all to myself to the City of Angeles to get — inspired.

There’s really no better place in LA to get inspired, or simply get away from all the cars and smog then the Getty Museum. . Having been to Italy the past year and seen some of the finest art exhibition in Rome & Florence, I went in with a humbled expectation, to say the least. But boy was I ever wrong… I was inspired in every exhibitions at the Getty. Everything from the architectures, the selection and the diversity of the exhibitions just blew me away. My experience at the Getty Museum shake me out of my museum-induced stupor.

Herb Ritts — American fashion / celebrity photographer specialized in black and whites. This man is my inspiration.
